The Bio-Behavioral Institute has offered hospital based intensive treatment since 1983. This is the second oldest program of its kind in the country. Given that our program has existed for many years, we have learned what works and what does not within the hospital setting. Over the years the staff has geared treatment specifically to be implemented in a hospital milieu in order to restore and improve functioning.
Our staff has full admission and visitation privileges at North Shore University Hospital. The hospital has a closed, 26-bed general adult psychiatric unit. Patients on the unit are required to attend various supportive and therapeutic groups offered by the hospital. In addition, they are seen by Bio-Behavioral staff Mona regular basis for cognitive treatment and medication management. This allows patients to benefit from our program while they are a part of the hospital unit.
This program is only available for patients who require hospitalization based on specific criteria, such as severity of symptoms and/or the ability to independently care for oneself. When psychiatrically appropriate, patients who live too far from the Institute or are unable to travel, can opt to reside in a local motel to receive intensive treatment if the hospitalization is not deemed to be necessary. This level of treatment is recommended when patients present with severe symptoms and require more intensive intervention then typical outpatient care. |
