THE FACTS ABOUT EATING DISORDERS

Each year millions of people in the United States are affected by serious and sometimes life-threatening eating disorders, characterized by severe disturbances in eating behavior. The vast majority--more than 90 percent --of those afflicted are adolescent and young adult women. Studies indicate that one in 10 college students suffers from some form of eating disorder. In many cases, these disorders have been present since high school or junior high school but were undetected then. The two most commonly diagnosed eating disorders are anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa.
